Go See Be Kind Rewind

Look, I can't stand Jack Black most of the time, and I can't really say that I'm much of a Mos Def fan either. But man, Be Kind Rewind is a wonderful movie that is completely worthy of your time. Mos Def is acually fantastic in it, playing a perfect Gondry character while making you wonder why he hasn't done something like this before, while Jack Black actually manages to be fairly funny throughout most the movie's run time.

The film lacks the strange, psychedelic brush strokes and heavy subject matter of Gondry's two previous films, but it'll still make you tear up a little, which is awesome because it's a perfect date movie and girls like emotions and stuff. Seriously, don't believe the so-so reviews. It's completely worth it, and the original soundtrack is fantastic as well. One of the few times I can honestly say "I left the theater with a smile on my face" like all those lamos who review movies for a living.

Melodica Gets Some Love from Pitchfork

We sent some info to Pitchfork's news department a few weeks ago concerning the Melodica Festival, and they finally posted a news story about it today. Of course, two of the bands they mentioned are no longer playing, but what can you do?

Ghosthustler Posts New Track

Ghosthustler have posted their excellent new track "Someone Else's Ride" on their Myspace page. We heard an early demo version of this song a few months back, and I have to say that this new one blows the other away. Yet another track from Ghosthustler that forces you to ask: how many ultra catchy dance singles can one band release in a row? And why don't more bands sound like ABC?

Mum, Stars of the Lid and Islands to play Granada

Mum will appear on April 28th, Stars of the Lid will appear on May 8th, and Islands will be playing on May 16th. Tickets are available here.

New Denton DIY Venue

In the place of the old 8th Continent venue at 731 Texas St. in Denton comes Wisconsin, a new DIY venue that promises to start holding regular shows at the once beloved spot where one of our WSJR shows got busted because dudes felt like they had to throw beer bottles at a train.

Anyway, their first show will take place on Thursday, March 13th and will feature STNNNG, Vampire Hands, Private Dance and Kaboom. We're sure you'll hear more about this soon.

Mom Releases Little Brite in Japan, Launches Video Contest

CJ Davis sent us this email concerning Mom's Japanese record deal:

Mom has been offered a Japanese release of little brite, and we're asking interested video making folks out there to submit a video for the song "sleep whale," which is on Mom's first official release, Little Brite.

The video chosen will be considered for possible inclusion on a japanese release of said record. We're still working on the details of this release, but the interested label wants to release it this spring. So, time is tight. The deadline is Feb. 28th, and replies can be sent to cj@goodrecords.com or CJDavis3@msn.com. It would be really cool if someone from around here made the chosen video.

We'll get an MP3 of the track posted on here this evening.

Strange Boys to Record with Jay Reatard

Strange Boys just dropped me a line to let me know that they'll be traveling to Memphis next week to record an album with Jay Reatard. I've been jamming to Reatard's Blood Visions for a while now, and based on the work I've heard from both he and the Strange Boys, I'm expecting big things out of this one.
