New Dallas DIY Venue?

Yes, maybe some of our dreams might be coming true!  Imagine, one of the largest cities in the United States finally getting a D.I.Y. venue!  Anyway, we don't know much about all of this quite yet (except that we're guessing the folks who run it are interesting in hardcore, metal, grindcore, etc.), but even just a sliver of good news for Dallas proper is worth discussing, no?  Here is a repost we found on Myspace:

\'DIY Venue / Everything that sucked about the late 90s\'

Anonymous said...

PS: 100 DIY music venues / Convergence spaces(whatever that means) won\'t change the fact that there is no audience for this in Dallas. There barely is an audience for it anywhere.

Shit is dead. Put it in the ground and do something new instead of trying to rob the graves of yesterday.

Anonymous said...

wow.

kill yourself.

i do happen to agree with the first sentence. dallas is shit.

but, yeah, dude. you are a miserable twat and you can die now.

Sounds awesome, but I don\'t really get Food Not Bombs. Who wants to eat bagels out of a dumpster? People can just go get them out of the dumpster themselves.

Dear fuckhead,

There is no audience for this, huh? A simple google check and even reading a few wikipedia entries will tell you \"whatever that means.\" Research before you type.

And where do you think a lot of shitty bands you listen to got their start?

Yeah seriously why the fuck shoot it down. What is your solution? What is something new for you? Opening up a club and dealing with the government? Talk about something new if you\'re gonna shoot down something that deals with people and being alive in a human lowest-common-denominator way.

Anonymous said...

Not Dead- DIY is not genre specific- continuously new.Cannot Die. Is the best. Quit the negative.

shits all the way in emory texas? wow. didnt know that was still dallas. now i know. well anyways props on this setup. seems like it would be bad ass.

The venue is not in Emory. It will be near Expo Park.

6:35 What you are saying makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever. We have done this before with great success and are going to do it again. Continue having fun going to shows at clubs and stay the fuck away.

Also, we will be open to having any type of music. The same people doing this are essentially the same people who ran the Sanctuary and if you were familiar with shows there, it will be similar...Extremely eclectic.

Anyone interested in helping out, contact the myspace. It is going to take a lot of manpower to get this place up to code, so anything will be appreciated.

There\'s definitely an audience for this. Look at 1919... It\'s an all ages venue, and they accept donations rather than a cover charge (nice, given our present economic situation). The fact that local businesses, like Spiral Diner, contribute money to keep 1919 open helps defer the costs.
However, I notice that NORML is on this new venue\'s top 8. That\'s really cool... but I think part of the reason 1919 has stuck around for so long is because of their no alcohol/drug policy. I\'ve been there several times when the police show up... only to find a bunch of sober kids being creative and having fun (if occasionally confrontational.)
Good luck to this place. I\'m sure I\'ll visit often.

\'Look at 1919 its an all ages venue\' that barely manages to keep it\'s doors open and needs \'donations\' in order to do so. In other words: NO AUDIENCE. It\'s a failure of a business model.

Anonymous said...

haha, \"business model\"

Get the fuck out of here.

So, it stays open for a year and then closes, who gives a fuck? At least that would have been a year of good shows not being held at Reno\'s or some other bar.

Seriously, it\'s people like you as to why things like this fail.

Dallas is riddled with pessimism and we want no part of it, so stay the fuck away.

Anonymous said...

awesome news.

Anonymous said...

yeah stay the fuck away from hot dogs dude.
you got um shoved way up your ass and its coming out your mouth.

Anonymous 10:44 clearly owns the Cavern.

1919, Tinnitus, Fra House, Moon Tunes, the Sanctuary, 8th Continent, Secret Headquarters... clearly there\'s no audience for these venues.

Anonymous said...

neo DIY venues on the creep.

Anonymous said...

People like me? You mean the people who actually go out and spend money on shit like this?

Seriously, your attitude sucks. You want a special little club for your special little friends and your attitude shows it.

Well, time will tell who is right.

Yes, people like you....Fucking naysayers.

You\'d be surprised how far a little optimism will get you.

Anonymous said...

How many people that weren\'t in bands were at the average RBC show? 3? 4?

Then it became 1 less after someone tried to steal my bike.

This shit is nothing but nostalgia.

You think kids in high school are getting into this shit? ahahaha. Too busy playing xbox and talking shit on the internet(like we are!)

Anonymous said...

2:26 size doesnt matter slut

Anonymous said...

The point is to create a community and celebrate music, not just sell drinks and rip off bands. If a club around here could catch onto a vibe like that, then there would be an audience at those clubs. Also, more people should be in bands. I\'m working on that shit myself.

Anonymous said...

Size matters a whole lot when it comes to paying the rent.

But you wouldn\'t know that from living in your parent\'s house for so long.

sucks when persons are acting spiteful when something positive is trying to occur. the big, the bad and the anonymous.

Hey, I guess you were right.

Got a call from the landlord last night after practice that the space was on fire. Immediately went there and they had Haskell blocked off...There was nothing left but one brick wall...No joke.

Once again, so close. We will not let this stop us. Already looking for a new building. If anyone has any ideas, or wants to help in this process, please do.

Proceed with gloating.

At least there was no one in it.

Or unfortunately no one was in it. Depending on your point of view.

smokers threw a roach in the trash. Well done. (literaly)

Good luck finding a new space; grassroots/diy should be something more people flock to--why put control over creativity in the hands of someone else? I hope you guys stick this out, seriously. Other people will care and contribute.

I heard the place burnt down, so back to the drawing board. I\'ve always supported DIY venues - preferrably BYOB ones though.
1919 Hemphill and the folks who volunteer / work there have been great for the scene - be it Indie, Punk, Hardcore or just plain noise.

Anybody who says there\'s no audience for DIY spaces has had their heads up their asses for the last...25 years? It strikes me as odd that anyone posting on this blog knows so little about the music scene as to be completely ignorant of the fact that what has made Denton so vibrant for the past 5-10 years is the DIY venues. They come and go, but they\'re always there, and there are always shows, and people always go. I wish I had a quarter for every time I emerged from a DIY show drenched in sweat cause there were so many people packed inside. Maybe you\'ve been at Lou\'s the whole time.
